Taking a low-dose aspirin daily may help women lower ir risk of developing ovarian cancer, according to a new study. Co-led by Moffitt Cancer Center, study found that women who reported taking a low-dose aspirin every day h a 23 per cent lower risk of ovarian cancer compared to  aspirin users.

It was also found that women who were heavy users of nsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Ibuprofen (vil) or Naproxen (Aleve), over a long period of time h a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer is most fatal gynaecological cancer, largely due to lack of early detection strategies. It is believed that inflammation that occurs during ovulation plays a role in development of this cancer. But anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, have been shown to lower risk of certain s of cancers.

For this study, Shelley Tworoger worked with researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to analyze data from more than 200,000 women who took part in Nurses' Health Studies based at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Of participants, 1,054 developed ovarian cancer. Researchers looked at participants' use of aspirin (325 milligrams), low-dose aspirin (100 milligrams or less), n-aspirin NSAIDs and acetamiphen.

ir analysis found that low-dose aspirin use was associated with a lower risk of ovarian cancer while standard-dose aspirin use was t. Conversely, data showed that women who took n-aspirin NSAIDs often, defined by at least 10 tablets per week for many years, h an increased risk of developing disease.

"We're t quite at st where we could make recommendation that daily aspirin use lowers ovarian cancer risk. We need to do more research. But it is definitely something women should discuss with ir physician," said Tworoger. study is present in journal - JAMA Oncology.

Ovarian Cancer affects ovaries in females. It is usually t detected in earlier sts and spres rapidly to pelvis and stomach - by which time it becomes fatal. Treatments of cancer include surgery and chemorapy to destroy cancer cells.
