PMS: Foods that you should avoid to make menstruation easier

Women bleed every month and go through discomfort during their periods. To ease some of the discomforts, read on what food to avoid in those days of the month

Women bleed every month and go through discomfort during their periods. While some experience physical cramps, others go through mood swings. The reports of the United States National Institute of Health claim that about 5-8 percent of women suffer from severe premenstrual syndrome. However, one can ease these symptoms by following a diet. Here are a few things to avoid while PMSing.

Sugar candies

You might crave for candies with added refined sugar. These candies do not contain sugar and can cause gas and bloating. These might make you feel worse and also increase your cramps. You can eat fruits that contain healthy nutrients when you crave for something sweet.

Alcohol

Drinking on your period should be avoided. There is a loss of blood in your body during your period and consuming alcohol may cause low blood pressure. You might already feel a little fatigued during your period and drinking will make matters worse. Alcohol may also increase your period flow and cause you to lose more blood.

Spicy food

Spicy foods lead to more gas and bloating if you are already suffering from cramps and fatigue. You might feel intense bleeding so it is recommended to remove them from your diet. However, if you are someone who enjoys spicy food, make sure these do not upset your stomach. Spices like fennel, coriander, cardamom, and saffron are known to aid digestion and help alleviate the common symptoms of PMS.

Processed food which is high in fats and salt should be avoided during your period. The hormones which are responsible for menstruation already cause water retention and a high salt diet will cause a gassy and bloating feeling. You can enjoy a simple dal-chawal or yoghurt and rice

Caffeine

Drinks that contain caffeine, like tea and coffee can make your cramps worse. Caffeine constricts the vessels that feed your uterus which can make your cramps even more painful. Other aerated drinks should also be avoided because they contain some amount of caffeine in it.
