Vegan diet refers to only plant-based food items like leafy vegetables, millets, nuts, and fruits. Veganism denounces the consumption of animal-based food items like meat, eggs, fish, milk and dairy products. Reportedly, the movement was started back in 1944 in the Indian sub-continent and eastern Medditerrain society. Initially, Veganism was limited to a certain sect of the society, but with passing time the movement has gained momentum.
Veganism is now much more mainstream and popular due to the involvement of popular faces like Beyonce and Jay Z, among others. According to a 2015 study conducted by a non-profit organisation, about 1 million Americans are now vegan. While the number of vegans is increasing by the day, here are a few advantages and disadvantages of switching to veganism.
Advantages of switching to veganism
1. The vegan diet is rich in fibre, which helps in digestion and increases the metabolic rate.
2. A vegan diet consists of food items that contain no bad cholesterol, which helps in keeping your cholesterol levels in control.
3. A high-fibre diet helps in controlling blood sugar levels, which in turn keeps one's diabetes in control.
4. A planned vegan diet helps in protecting one from chronic heart and liver-related diseases.
5. Other than the bodily benefits, veganism has enormous social benefits like promoting sustainable agriculture, reducing the carbon footprint, and preventing inhumane activities against livestock.
Disadvantages of switching to veganism
1. A vegan diet lacks nutrients found primarily in animal products like Vitamin B12, Calcium, Vitamin D, and Omega 3 fatty acids.
2. A vegan diet might provide a handful of protein through its restrained diet.
3. Due to following a typical eating pattern, one's body gets accustomed to it and may become intolerant towards other food items.
