What is International Workers' Memorial Day?

In 1989, AFL-CIO declared April 28 as International Workers’ Memorial Day in hour of hundreds of thousands of working people killed and injured on ir job every year. April 28 is anniversary of date 'Occupational Safety and Health Act (1970)' that went into effect, and when Occupational Safety and Health Administration (1971) was formed. Previously in 1984, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) established a day of mourning. Canadian Labour Congress declared an annual day of remembrance in 1985 on April 28, which is anniversary of a comprehensive Workers' Compensation Act (refer to entry Workplace Safety & Insurance Board), passed in 1914. In 1991, Canadian parliament passed an Act respecting a National Day of Mourning for persons killed or injured in workplace, later making April 28 an official Workers’ Mourning Day, around globe.
