Karwa Chauth: Festival rituals to follow before and after moonrise

Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival that is celebrated on fourth day of ‘Shar Poornima’. On this auspicious festival, married women observe a day-long fast for ir husbands. It is believed that on Karwa Chauth, praying and keeping fast gives your husband a long-life. This year it is celebrated on October 17, 2019.
Karwa Chauth rituals
On this day, women dress up wearing bright clos that are preferably new. y get up early in morning before sunrise and savour sargi. A Sargi is given to m by ir mor-in-law and Baya from her mor. Sargi consists of fruits, sweets, clos, jewellery, etc. Baya contains Karwa, pitcher that is believed to be most important part of Karwa Chauth Pooja. After having Sargi, y keep a fast for whole day and break it only after catching a glimpse of moon.

In evening, women wear ir best attires, decked up in jewellery and make-up. In Hindu trition, red is considered as a sacred colour in marri and refore most of women around country prefer wearing red for occasion.

For Karwa Chauth Pooja, women sit toger in a group and Karwa Chauth Katha is narrated. y also put Sindoor and or Pooja Samagri along with flowers on idol of Goddess Parvati. After praying and completing rituals, y wait for moonrise patiently. Karwa is a pitcher filled with water and coins that women use during festival.

When moon rises, wife first sees moon using a sieve and n looks at her husband through same sieve. Some women also light up a small diyas and place it on sieve while performing ritual. After moon sighting, husband offers water to wife and that’s how fast is broken. women n enjoy dinner with family members.
