Mahashivratri, which translates to ‘ Great Night of Shiva’, is an annual festival celebrated by Hindus in glory of Lord Shiva who is one of most followed Gods of religion. festival is celebrated in different parts of India with different rituals and tritions. Mahashivratri vrat is observed as one of biggest fasts of Hindu tritions.
Mainly, re are two main s of Mahashivratri fast, a regular vrat and a strict Mahashivratri vrat. After taking a bath with sesame seeds water, every devotee observes a full day fast and break fast on next day. y pledge for self-determination throughout fasting period and seek blessing of Lord Shiva to finish fast without any interference.

In strict form of Mahashivratri vrat, even water is t allowed. However, consumption of fruits and milk is suggested during day time which should be followed by strict fasting during night. In or words during day time, fruits and milk can be consumed. devotees need to perform Mahashivratri puja and Mahashivratri Katha in evening. y break fast next day after taking a bath. Devotees break fast between sunrise and before end of Chaturdashi Tithi.

Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife, was worried that poison consumed by him might enter his body and cause him pain. To save him from pain, Parvati held him by his throat to stop poison from spreing, for one day and one night, which is why he turned blue and earned name Neelakantha. Since Parvati Devi fasted entire day and night at this time, it has become an -old trition to fast and stay awake all night during Mahashivratri.
