This festival is celebrated in different parts of India with different tritions and names. According to Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated on a specific day that is referred to as a solar day in Hindu calendar. festival is all about worshipping sun and legend of Hindu mythology related to Sankranti.

Sankranti was a goddess according to Hindu mythology. As per legend, Sankranti killed a devil named Sankarasur. day next to Makar Sankrant is called Karidin or Kinkrant.

On this day, Devi slayed devil Kinkarasur. information of Makar Sankranti is available in Panchang. Panchang is Hindu Almanac that provides information on , form, clothing, direction, and movement of Sankranti.

  • Lohri is celebrated in Haryana and Punjab. At night, people gar around bonfire and throw til, puffed rice and corns into flames of bonfire. Prayers are offered to bonfire seeking abundance and prosperity. 
  • In Bihar, Makar Sankranti festival is kwn as Khichdi. On this day, donating ur, rice, gold, woollen clos, blankets, etc. have ir own importance.
  • In Maharashtra, all married women donate cotton, oil, and salt to or married women on ir first Sankrant.
  • In Bengal, re is a trition of donating til after taking bath in Makar Sankrant. A huge fair is also organised every year in Gangasagar.
  • On occasion of Makar Sankranti in Tamil Nu, this festival is celebrated as Pongal for four days.
