One of major rituals is taking an oil bath before sunrise as Lord Krishna did same after killing Narakasura. Taking an oil bath is an attempt to seek maximum blessings by devotees. Narak Chaturdashi goes by various names and hence rituals also differ in different parts of country. In rrn India, it is celebrated as Chhoti Diwali. In South India, it is celebrated as Tamil Deepavali. In Maharashtra, devotees celebrate this day with ritual of Abhyanga Snan.

Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated by offering various items and performing certain rituals. puja performed on this day involves oil, flowers and sandalwood. Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi are worshipped on this day.
