Hanging Garden of Mumbai was built in 1881 over a water reservoir. Hence place got name. This water reservoir would supply entire South Mumbai with water for its daily uses. reservoir used to be an open one until British built Hanging Garden over it.

Hanging Gardens in Mumbai is also known as Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens. terraced gardens overlook beautiful Kamala Nehru Park on its west. park was initially built to prevent water from reservoir to get polluted as it was one of major sources of water supply in South Mumbai.

It is dedicated to Sir Pherozeshah Merwanjee Mehta. well-known Parsi leer is fondly even dressed as Lion of Bombay by many due to his numerous contributions to development of city. Mehta was also president of Indian National Congress in 1890.
