Red Fort is a historic monument located in heart of Delhi. fort is kwn for being named after red-coloured sandstones used in its constructions. fort was built by Fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. In earlier days, fort was used for ceremonies held by royals. However today, it is used for national and political ceremonies. fort has three gates, while only two of which are functional. fort is t only attractive on outside, but also on inside. fort houses a museum, along with halls, royal chambers and palaces, etc.

History

Red Fort is octagonal in shape and was built in 17th Century by Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. Spre across 254 acres of land, fort has been a royal residence of Mughals since 1648. re are three gates to fort, but Mughals used to use Khizrab Gate to enter. However, gate is w closed and only Delhi and Lahore gates are functioning. fort has been ruled by many dynasties and finally by British people. Mughals signed a treaty with Marathas. However, Ahmed Shah Durrani of Durrani dynasty captured fort after battle of Panipat. Marathas reconquered fort in 1771. Marathas occupied fort in 1788 before losing it to British in 1803 post Anglo-Maratha war.

fort has a garden surrounding area inside fort. It also has queen and mistresses’ chambers inside fort. re are architectural buildings inside fort that indicate that earlier a palace was supposed to be built inside fort. re are a few buildings that are still intact and open for visitors to see. re is a museum inside fort that holds artifacts from Mughal era.

Timings/ Entry fee

Red fort is extremely beautiful all round clock. If you visit during national holidays, an array of activities are planned on day. It is also much crowded than a rmal day. beauty of fort is t changed by wear. However, summers in Delhi are brutal. It can get really hot and humid during summers. prime winter season that starts from October is prime tourism season. fort is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 7 am to 5:30 pm, and it takes 2-3 hours to look around fort. entry fee for Red Fort is ₹10, per he for Indian citizens. SAARC citizens, BIMSTEC citizens and ors are charged ₹250 per he. Children below 15 years of do t have an entry fee.

Located in capital city of India, Delhi re are a lot of local transport facilities available. nearest metro station to Red Fort is Chandni Chowk metro station on yellow line. Red fort is t more than a 15-minute walk from re. However, you can also take a taxi or an autorickshaw to historic monument.

Lesser kwn facts about fort

fort was originally white in colour. As sandstones were used in making of monument, its colour changed over time.

fort was originally named as Qila-e-Mubarak, which means Blessed fort. However, its name as its colour did.

last Mughal emperor Bahur Shah Zafar was tried for treason by British in Red Fort itself. He was tried in Diwan-i-Khas and was stripped off his title after being found guilty.
