Republic Summit: CM Himanta speaks on UCC, says 'Its implementation is our responsibility'

Himanta Biswa Sarma stressed why the UCC is necessary for the country, adding that the implementation of the UCC is the responsibility of the BJP govt.

Speaking at  Republic Summit 2023 in national capital, Assam Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leer Himanta Biswa Sarma stressed why Uniform Civil Code is necessary for country, ding that implementation of UCC is responsibility of BJP government.

On being asked when BJP-led Centre government will implement Uniform Civil Code in country given that it was ir nda, CM Himanta said, "Modi ji kws his timing. I don’t want to comment on what is going on in courts, but we believe that Uniform Civil Code is one of ndas which we need to accomplish for women of India. You cant allow a husband to have three wives."

In conversation with Republic Media Network Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, CM Himanta said, "What is UCC? UCC is simple and t a complicated thing. If a Hindu husband has one wife, n a Muslim or or religious people should have same facility. I am putting it in a positive way because if a Hindu woman can enjoy that privilege why cant a Muslim woman enjoy that in independent India?"

"Are our Muslim women a second-class citizen of this country? It is necessary for m in spite of presence of Article 14 (Right to Equality). So UCC is our responsibility and this is what we owe to Muslim women of this country," he ded.

On Special Marri Act, he said, "Sometimes we go to this act- Special Marri Act. But women of our vills don’t kw about Special Marri Act, y want to get a marri in an hourable manner and want one husband. If special marri act is re and re is problem, n why t bring UCC? Where is issue?... Muslim women have been going through exploitation since time when Sultan came to India. It’s been hundreds of years."
