We don't have a proper system of accountability for judges in India, says Kiren Rijiju

Speaking at the Republic Summit, Kiren Rijiju said that there is no system in the Indian judiciary to judge the accountability of judges.

Speaking at Republic Summit 2023 on April 26, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju talked about accountability of judges in India, stating that re is system to judge accountability in judicial system, but still, it remains under constant scrutiny of people. “Constitution does t allow election of judges, in fact, y are appointed. We, politicians, are under constant scrutiny of people. refore, if we fail, we will be dismissed by people," Union Law Minister said.

“We don't have a proper system of accountability for judges in India, but still people are watching m. In this social media , one can get away from people's eyes,” he ded.

Stressing that Independence of judiciary is very important for a democratic country like India, Rijiju said, “We are in a unique situation. constitution of India is re. Until and unless Parliament amends constitution provisions remain re. When it comes to appointment of judges, Constitution is very clear.”

“Without amending provisions of constitution, Supreme Court through its constitutional bench can change provision without any amendment. I feel that we need to have very serious negotiations with collegium. I've sent new proposals on provisions for appointment of judges,” he ded.
