The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set for India's ambitious moon mission, the Chandrayaan-2. In its second attempt, the GSLV Mk-III rocket will now lift off at 2.43 pm today, July 22 and the countdown has already begun! 11 years after its successful first lunar mission Chandrayaan-1, ISRO is looking to explore the unchartered lunar south pole with the Chandrayaan-2. ISRO's first moon mission was operation for 312 days, making over 3,400 orbits around the Moon. The launch rehearsal of GSLV Mk-III was completed on Saturday and both launch vehicle and its performance is normal, ISRO had said.

Key reasons why ISRO's mission Chandrayaan-2 is so special

1. Chandrayaan-2 is India's first space mission to perform a soft landing on the Moon's south polar region.

2. India will be the fourth country ever to soft-land on the lunar surface, after the US, Russia, and China.

3. Chandrayaan-2 is all set to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface with home-grown technology.

4. Chandrayaan-2 is also ISRO's mission to explore the lunar terrain with home-grown technology.

5. The Lander will part ways with the Orbiter and soft-land at the proposed site close to the lunar South Pole where no space agency has got to so far.

6. The integrated module of the Orbiter and Lander will reach Moon orbit using Orbiter propulsion module amid several challenges.

7. Chandrayaan-2 aims to improve the understanding of the moon, in addition to discoveries that would benefit humanity as a whole.

8. This mission encourages modern-day discovery and space exploration to increase our understanding of space

9. Chandrayaan-2 leads to the advancement of technology and inspire a future generation of explorers and scientists.

The GSLV Mk-III consists of three modules, namely Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) & Rover (Pragyan). The Orbiter and Lander modules accommodated inside the GSLV MK-III launch vehicle, interfaced mechanically and stacked together as an integrated module. The Rover is housed inside the Lander.
