In new research, scientists have been able to decode century-old mystery behind changes in earth’s magnetic field. A new study published in Journal Nature Geoscience, physicists from University of Alberta has revealed reason for weakening magnetic field over  Pacific region since its first observation in 1930. Led by geophysicist Mathieu Dumberry, study revealed that core flows like winds in atmosphere or currents in ocean that maintain Earth’s magnetic field was weaker under Pacific.

Furr, study explained that  planetary-scale current that hangs close to equator in Atlantic region was deflected to higher latitude in Pacific region that resulted in weakening of magnetic fields. However, reason for this is yet to be found. Geophysicist Mathieu Dumberry, lead author of study, observed in research, “Earth’s magnetic fields have been a puzzle since 1930s when it was first ticed.”

Dumberry said, re are fluid motions in liquid core of Earth that generate and maintain magnetic fields that give us rrn Lights and shield us from charged particles from . Scientists model magnetic field for a variety of applications, including determining your orientation when you look at a map on your smartphone.

Indicative that makeup of core-mantle boundary region was heterogeneous and needed more research, Dumberry ted that while scientific model answers reason for weakening magnetic fields, it poses new questions about occurrence of those phemena. “ conductance of lowermost mantle is most probably t uniform around globe,” Dumberry stressed in study titled ‘Weak Magnetic Field Changes Over Pacific Due to High Conductance in Lowermost Mantle’.

Weakening in strength by 5% every 100 years

According to a published report by NASA, earth is in phase called  Brunhes Magnetic Chron when South Magnetic Pole is in rrn Hemisphere. While  Scientists have long kwn that magnetic pole moves,  Earth's magnetic field have been observed to be weakening in strength by 5% every 100 years. NASA scientists predict that may be near zero in ar few thousand years at this rate. Additionally, Scientists at European ncy are using data from ESA’s Swarm constellation to improve ir understanding of weakening magnetic fields stretching from Africa to South America across an area kwn as ‘South Atlantic Amaly.’ Having lost around 9% of its strength on a global aver, magnetic intensity of Earth in aforementioned area dropped from around 24 000 nateslas to 22 000 between1970 to 2020 that had created a puzzle for scientists, according to a report published by ESA.
