Nowadays when we talk about Artificial intelligence, the first thing we get in mind is either the edited videos or the automated responses from the ChatGPT. But people who are into exploring things use these things to make discoveries with the data we have for all these years. 

In a groundbreaking advancement for cosmology, researchers from the Flatiron Institute's Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) have leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve unprecedented precision in determining five crucial cosmological parameters. These parameters, essential for understanding the universe, were extracted from a dataset of over 100,000 galaxies observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).

Unveiling the Universe's Settings with AI

Cosmological parameters can be thought of as the "settings of the universe that determine how it operates on the largest scales," according to astronomer Liam Parker, a co-author of the study. The team's innovative use of AI has allowed them to analyze small-scale details in galaxy distribution—an approach that had not been previously explored.

Breaking New Ground in Cosmic Analysis

The traditional methods focused on larger-scale trends, but this new AI-driven analysis reveals previously inaccessible information. "For a couple of years now, we've known that there's additional information there; we just didn't have a good way of extracting it," said lead author Chang Hoon Hahn from Princeton University.

Training AI with Simulated Universes

To train the AI, the researchers generated 2,000 simulated universes with varying cosmological settings and incorporated real-life challenges such as atmospheric blurring and telescope imperfections. This training enabled the AI to learn what to look for and to refine its ability to analyze actual SDSS data.

Achieving Unprecedented Precision

The results were remarkable. The AI method was able to determine the parameter describing the universe's "clumpiness" with less than half the uncertainty of traditional techniques. This advancement is equivalent to conducting a traditional analysis with about four times as many galaxies, significantly improving the efficiency of data usage.

Implications for the Future of Cosmology

"This method was 'equivalent to a traditional analysis using around four times as many galaxies,'" the researchers noted. The use of AI has allowed astronomers to push the boundaries of what's possible with less data, an achievement that could not have been realized through conventional methods alone. According to Hahn, "If you didn't have the machine learning, you'd need hundreds of thousands" of simulations to achieve similar results.

Potential to Solve Cosmic Mysteries

This breakthrough has the potential to address major cosmic mysteries, such as the Hubble tension—a discrepancy in the estimated values of the Hubble constant, which measures the rate of the universe's expansion. With upcoming surveys like the European Euclid survey, AI-powered algorithms will be crucial for extracting the maximum value from new data.

A New Era in Understanding the Universe

In summary, the integration of AI into cosmology represents a significant leap forward, offering astronomers new tools to decode the complexities of the universe and potentially resolve long-standing cosmic puzzles.
