COVID-19: Hypertension medicines may improve survival chances, says new study

As per the study, patients taking medicines for high blood pressure showcased low mortality rates and the severity of the infection was also reduced.

Researchers have found that COVID-19 patients taking medicines for hypertension are more likely to survive from disease and suffer from reduced severity of illness. According to a study published in journal Current Arosclerosis Reports, patients taking medicines for high blood pressure showcased low mortality rates and severity of infection was also reduced in comparison to those who did t take hypertension medication.

study reportedly monitored over 28,000 coronavirus patients who were taking medicines for high blood pressure and found a trend of low risk of deaths.

This comes as a big development, especially at a time when world is battling to fight COVID-19 pandemic by finding a cure to disease. study encourd patients to continue with ir hypertension medication during COVID-19 pandemic. research was primarily studying role of high blood pressure medicines in COVID-19 patients in order to better understand impact of drugs in people suffering from disease. role of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors, tably angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) was analysed in study.

study found evidence of beneficial effects in hypertensive cohort and strongly recommend patients to continue with RAAS inhibitor pharmacorapy during COVID-19 pandemic. research, however, clearly states re is evidence to prove that hypertension medication was primary cause of low mortality rate among patients who were monitored for study. "Although our study sheds light on association between RAAS blockers and mortality in COVID-19, it begs ar question as to wher ACEi/ARB lowers mortality in se patients. re are clinical data currently on effect of ACEi/ARB in COVID-19," study said.
