NASA commemorates Earth Day 2020 with iconic 'Blue Marble' - Earth's first pic from space

On the occasion of 50th Earth Day on Wednesday, US space agency NASA shared the first pic of Earth from space, titled the 'Blue Marble' on social media.

On occasion of 50th Earth Day on Wednesday,  United States' ncy NASA shared first photograph of Earth from on social media. Earth Day is observed annually on April 22 to raise awareness about need for environmental preservation. 

NASA took opportunity to repost iconic Blue Marble photograph of planet which was snapped by astronauts on Apollo 17 mission in December 1972. While taking to Instagram, NASA shared im of Earth in all its glory, with oceans, continents, and clouds as seen from .

‘Iconic view of Earth’ 

While sharing picture, NASA said, “Against blackness of , a sparkling blue orb teems with life and energy. land masses shift, oceans swell and clouds erupt in electric displays of power. We don’t always see it -- but we feel it. Fifty years ago today, thousands of people marked first Earth Day. Since n, it has become a global reminder of how all of Earth’s systems are interconnected”.

According to NASA’s official website,  Blue Marble im marks first time a photograph of south polar ice cap was taken. Furrmore, NASA also explained, “This translunar coast photograph extends from Mediterranean Sea area to Antarctica south polar ice cap”. im was also first in which ‘almost entire coastline of Africa was clearly visible’. 

Meanwhile, due to coronavirus pandemic, re is t much to celebrate this year. However, NASA in caption wrote, “Today we’re physically separated, but toger we can all appreciate marvel that is ship Earth,” motivating people to appreciate planet's beauty at its best.
