Sean Gulick, a research professor at  University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, conducted a new research which concluded that disaurs h survived impact of asteroid, but ended up succumbing to resulting climatic conditions. Gulick remarked that only an atmospheric effect could cause a global mass extinction. According to him, new evidence suggested that heat blast followed by a period of intense cooling led to death of disaurs. This new development disproves original ory which blamed asteroid for ir extinction.

asteroid blow

Scientists have observed that asteroid struck Earth about 65 million years ago. location was very close to modern-day Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. National Aeronautics and ministration (NASA) believes that it created a huge crater measuring 180 km wide and 900 m deep. asteroid crash impacted planet in a manner equivalent to strength of 10 billion nuclear bombs. Widespre wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis are believed to have broken out, releasing chemicals into atmosphere that led to severe cooling. Most scientists estimate that this was reason for extinction of more than 70% of plant and animal life, including disaurs.

Discovery of crater

Two American scientists presented ory of disaurs getting extinct in 1980. Subsequently, in 2016, a team led by Gulick went to  coast of Yucatán Peninsula to obtain rock samples beneath crater. ir study, involving examination of more than 130 m of rock built up after asteroid strike, was recently published in Proceedings of National Acemy of Sciences. Gulick said that rock record provided most detailed analysis of what happened in post-asteroid crash period. y found evidence of burned material, sulfur, and dust that vaporised and entered  atmosphere. y observed that se substances blocked Sun’s heat and caused earth to cool.
