Saturn's largest moon Titan undergoes significant seasonal changes in its energy budget that may lead to new insights about climate change, said a study.

Researchers have found that Saturn's largest moon Titan undergoes significant seasonal changes in its energy budget -- amount of solar energy it absorbs, and heat it emits -- an advance that may lead to new insights about climate fluctuations on Earth. study, published in journal Geophysical Research Letters, ted that Titan is only body in solar system, or than Earth, with a significant atmosphere and liquid surface lakes. 

Collected from Cassini mission

researchers, including those from University of Houston in US, said Titan's dynamically-varying energy budget has important impacts on its wear and climate systems. As part of study, scientists used data collected from Cassini mission between 2004 and 2017. y said this data pertained to equivalent of about half an Earth year for Saturn and Titan, or portions of three seasons. According to researchers, data provided first opportunity to systematically examine seasonal variations of Titan.

Both moon's emitted rmal energy and absorbed solar energy decreased over 14-year period, study ted. However, y said rmal emission from Titan dropped less -- about 6.8 per cent -- compared with an 18.6 per cent drop in solar energy it received. study ted that this varied between rrn and sourn atmospheres of Titan, and also depended on moon's distance from sun during its orbit. While re are some parallels that could be drawn to study similar effects on Earth, researchers said our planet and Titan also differed drastically in several ways.

researchers said surface liquid on Titan is liquid methane, rar than water, for example, and explained that it takes Saturn and its moons far longer to complete an orbit around Sun. It takes Saturn about 29 Earth years to complete its orbit, said Liming Li, a physics professor at UH and corresponding author on paper.

Still, researchers said, learning more about energy budget of Titan can add to understanding of climate change on Earth. "Earth's small energy imbalance has significant effects on its global warming and climate change," Liming said. "We expect that dynamically-varying energy budget and possible energy imbalance have important impacts on wear and climate systems on Titan," he added.
