Scientists have discovered a coral snake species from Himachal Presh that y never thought actually existed. species found in Himachal Presh was thought to be lost for 120 years and was recently rediscovered. new discoveries have found that coral snakes found in India are absolutely unique and t variants of mere or species.
Scientists find unique coral snake species in Himachal Presh
Researchers from National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru, Wildlife Institute of India in Dehrun and Natural History Museum, London have rediscovered a snake that was assumed to be lost for 120 years. scientific research is being authored by Zeeshan A. Mirza of NCBS, Vishal Varma of WII and Patrick Campbell of NHM. paper was published in international journal Zootaxa.

In paper, Zeeshan reportedly talked about Black-bellied coral snake (scientifically called Simicrurus nigriventer). This particular snake species was described in year 1909 as a variety of McClelland’s coral snake species from Kasauli, Himachal Presh by British naturalist Col. Frank Wall. But in 2019, when a ro-killed specimen was collected near Solan by Vishal Varma, it changed earlier views of scientists about particular species.

Researchers found out that DNA data of newly found specimen showed that it is unique from all or species, hence t a mere variant of McClelland’s coral snake which it was earlier thought to be. new specimen was found to be different from or species of coral snakes of genus. Genus is a rank used in biological classification of living and fossil organisms.

In fact, specimen was diverse in particular with only species of genus kwn from India. researchers compared scalation data of snake with specimens in collection of Natural History Museum and zoological collection of University of Copenhn.
According to researchers, most of work conducted on herpetofauna of Himachal Presh was undertaken during British rule. refore, many species were merely identified based on external features which are t sufficient to identify cryptic species. researchers hope to show that diversity of Western Himalayas is also unique when coral snakes are concerned.

Zeeshan Mirza has been working with college students from state to document diversity of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids. Zeeshan along with his colleagues have been studying reptiles of country. He has identified and described over 43 new species to science that include snakes, lizards, tarantulas and scorpions.
