NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is set to celebrate her 59th birthday aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on September 19, marking the second time she will observe her birthday in space. Williams, who has been aboard the ISS since June 6 with fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore, faces an extended stay in orbit due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

Williams, born on September 19, 1965, in Euclid, Ohio, is currently in the midst of her third space mission. She first flew to the ISS as part of Expedition 14/15 from December 2006 to June 2007, and later joined Expedition 32/33 from July to November 2012, celebrating her birthday in space for the first time during that mission.

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Physical Science from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology. Williams' notable career includes a significant contribution to scientific research and maintenance aboard the ISS during her missions.

This current mission is Williams' longest yet, with an expected duration of eight months. She and Wilmore are scheduled to return to Earth in February 2025 aboard SpaceX’s Dragon Crew spacecraft. Their return is contingent on the resolution of issues with the Boeing Starliner, which recently returned to Earth empty due to technical problems.

In an emergency, NASA has prepared the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft supporting Crew-8 to serve as a contingency return vehicle. The spacecraft is configured to assist Williams and Wilmore if necessary until the SpaceX Crew-9 mission arrives, with a launch scheduled no earlier than September 24.

Williams, known for her unique space experiences, once carried a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, samosas, and a figure of Lord Ganesha during her previous missions, reflecting her personal and cultural connections. With a cumulative 322 days spent in space, Williams continues to make significant contributions to space exploration and research.
