49ers, Redskins accused of 'hypocrisy' after showing support for Blackout Tuesday

The 49ers and the Redskins faced social media backlash for their participation in the online movement 'Blackout Tuesday.' Both teams were branded 'hypocrites'.

San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins faced social media backlash for ir participation in online movement 'Blackout Tuesday.' social movement got support from celebrities and athletes across globe, as people came toger to show ir solidarity towards protests against racial injustice in aftermath of George Floyd's death. However, 49ers and Redkins were subject to social media criticism as fans called franchises 'hypocrites' for ir previous acts of racism.

San Francisco 49ers branded 'hypocrites' by fans on social media

San Francisco 49ers participated in Blackout Tuesday campaign by sharing an all-black photo to ir social media handles. However, ir support for  fight to end racism in US was deemed "unfair" by fans on social media as y reminded franchise of ousting of quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2017. Kaepernick gained national interest in 2016 after he opted against standing during national anm for entirety of 2016 season.

Kaepernick, who h been a political activist against racial injustice and police brutality, chose to kneel during  national anm as a sign of protest. His actions were widely criticised, which resulted in his exit from 49ers ahe of following season.

While Kaepernick himself opted out of his contract, it was reported that 49ers were looking for a way to get rid of quarterback considering his controversial nature. Since 2017, Kaepernick has so far struggled to engineer a move back to NFL. Unsurprisingly, fans were quick to remind 49ers of ir recent act of racism against Colin Kaepernick.

Washington Redskins urged to change ir names amid protests against racism

Meanwhile, Redkins endured same fate as 49ers for ir participation in Blackout Tuesday campaign. Unlike 49ers, Washington Redksins were criticised on social media for using 'Redskins' in ir name. Redskins have been criticised in past for ir name, which has been considered racist towards Native Americans. Fans suggested Redskins could rar show ir support for protests by changing ir name inste. High-profile names like US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined social media bashing of Redskins.
