Barbados: India’s captain Rohit Sharma on Saturday announced his retirement from T20 International cricket after the World Cup triumph, minutes after his fellow mate Virat Kohli hung up his boots from the shortest format of the game. Announcing his signing off from T20I cricket, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said, “No better time to say goodbye.” The Indian skipper made it official while addressing media personnel after India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 beating South Africa in a nail-biting face off in the final.

Prior to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli called it quits from T20 International cricket after winning the ‘Player of the Match’ award at the Kensington Oval.

Talking to the press in Barbados, Sharma said, "That was my last game as well. Honestly, I have enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. There is no better time to say goodbye to this format. I have loved every moment of it. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted to do. win the Cup and say (goodbye."

Clarifying that he is only retiring from the T20 internationals, Rohit Sharma confirmed that he will 'very much' continue to play ODIs and Tests.

The 37-year-old had led India in the 2022 T20 World Cup where the team was ousted in the semifinals by eventual champions England.

A year later, India reached the final of the 50-over World Cup at home under his leadership, but succumbed to Australia in the summit clash at Ahmedabad.

Rohit leaves T20Is with 4231 runs from 159 matches, having made five hundreds and 32 fifties. He continues to be active in the Test and ODI formats.
