15-Year-Old Maharashtra Girl Dies After Cricket Ball Hits Her Head During Practice at School

A devastating accident occurred at AKM HS School in Kottakkal, Malappuram, resulting in the tragic death of 15-year-old Thapasya P. The Class 10th student was practicing cricket with her schoolmates on October 21 when the incident happened. Thapasya, who was not wearing a helmet, was distracted by something on the pitch and tried to pull away from the delivery but was unsuccessful. The ball hit her on the head, causing a fatal injury.

School authorities immediately rushed Thapasya to a hospital in Kottakkal, where she was admitted for three days before being shifted to a hospital in Kozhikode. Her family later transferred her to a hospital in Maharashtra , where she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.
The school principal, Ali K, reportedly expressed condolences and stated that the school had cricketing gear for all its players, but Thapasya was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of safety protocols and wearing protective gear during sports activities, especially for young students. This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the risks involved in contact sports and the need for proper safety protocols to prevent such accidents.
This is not the first time that a young kid aspiring to become a cricketer has died due to an accident on the field. Similar incidents have occurred across the country in the past as well.

In November 2014, Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes died following a similar incident on the field. Huges was hit on the neck by the ball after an attempted hook shot off a bouncer during the Sheffield Sheild match between South Australia and New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The ball struck an unprotected area just below his left ear.

Hughes collapsed and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he eventually succumbed to the injuries. In the wake of the incident, a new design was introduced to improve the safety of cricket helmets.
