Former Australian captain Adam Gilchrist is one of many legends who were a part of IPL in its initial years. Even though T20 format gained relevance by end of his international career, Adam Gilchrist took a great liking to it and was one of IPL's most successful batsman in its initial years. On Monday, Adam Gilchrist completed 12 years of smashing his maiden IPL century, that came against Mumbai Indians.

Adam Gilchrist plays with Mumbai Indians bowlers for fun, hits 10 sixes

Coming into inaugural IPL, Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers side looked strong with big names like Adam Gilchrist, VVS Laxman, Shahid Afridi and Rohit Sharma in lineup. Playing 14th match of 2008 IPL, Chargers were visiting Mumbai Indians at DY Patil Stadium on April 27, 2008 and were yet to win a match in season. After Chargers captain VVS Laxman won toss and fielded first, his side got some good scalps from Mumbai top-order to make Shaun Pollock's team struggle.

However, Pollock, young Abhishek Nayar and Dwayne Bravo played some cameos that eventually helped Mumbai get to 154.

Coming out to chase 155, dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist and captain VVS Laxman opened innings for Hyderabad. Almost immediately, Adam Gilchrist started taking Mumbai Indians bowlers to cleaners. He got into groove with a couple of boundaries to begin with and n shifted to hitting big sixes without any fear.

Shaun Pollock was out of answers as matter who he brought into attack, Gilchrist would still end up hitting a few sixes out of ground. 7 out of 11 Mumbai players bowled in that innings, without any success. Getting to his 50 in 28 balls, Gilchrist shifted gears and began smashing every bowler for same pull shot. Anything short and Gilchrist would pull it for six.

On his 42nd ball, Gilchrist smashed a good length delivery for a massive six and brought up his maiden IPL hundred. This was n-fastest IPL century and was only bettered by Yusuf Pathan's 37-ball blitz in 2010. In end, Deccan Chargers chased down 155 in just 12 overs.

Gilchrist made 109* with 9 fours and 10 sixes and VVS Laxman hung around at or end with 37 off 26. 10-wicket victory was Chargers' first of 2008 season. innings was arguably highlight of Hyderabad side's season, which ended in dismay as y finished at bottom of points table. On or hand, Mumbai Indians finished agonizingly at 5th position. Here are highlights.

In IPL 2009, Adam Gilchrist was appointed as captain of team and new-look Chargers won IPL. Gilchrist n went on to play for Kings XI Punjab in 2011 and Chargers team was disbanded after 2012. y were replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad. IPL 2020 is currently suspended due to India lockdown.
