In a major setback, Bangladesh won't avail of the service of Mushfiqur Rahim in their Asia Cup Super Fours fixture against India. Following India's loss against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have been ruled out of the Asia Cup and are not in contention for a place in the final.
3 things you need to know
- Mushfiqur Rahim will not return for the India game
- The player last played in the Sri Lanka game
- Bangladesh have already been ruled out of contention to feature in the final
Mushfiqur Rahim has been granted an extended leave by BCB
The player has been granted a leave to be with his wife who delivered their second child recently. The former Bangladesh skipper has been in Dhaka following the completion of the Sri Lanka game and will now be with his family for an extended period. The player will miss the India clash which is of no importance given the fact that India have already qualified for the summit clash to be played on Sunday.
Bangladesh cricket board issued a statement confirming the aforementioned development.
"Bangladesh batsman Mushfiqur Rahim will miss Friday's Super Four match against India as he has been granted an extention of leave by the Board to be with his newborn child and family.
"BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Mohammed Jalal Yunus said: "Mushfiqur has informed us that his wife is still recovering, and he needs to be by her side and with their children at this time. We fully understand his situation and have decided to permit him to skip the game."
"Mushfiqur, who had returned to Bangladesh to witness the birth of his second child, was initially expected to rejoin the team in Colombo for the India match. However, he will now remain in Dhaka with his family."
The Asia Cup hasn't shaped the way the Bangladesh cricket team would have hoped. Except for their victory against Afghanistan, they have failed to garner a single win in this continental tournament. Ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup next month, their performance will leave a massive hole in their expectations it stands.
