Australia fast bowler Jason Behrendorff to undergo spinal surgery

Australian left-arm fast bowler Jason Behrendorff will undergo spinal surgery and has ruled himself out of the entire 2019-2020 domestic season. Behrendorff suffered from lower back pain and stress fractures in 2015 for the first time and has been battling with it since then. The 29-year-old played a key role in 2019 cricket world cup taking a fifer against England at Lord's. But after his stint in England, he returned to Australia with aggravated pain and decided to undergo surgery.

On Pattinson's way

Behrendorff has opted for the same spinal surgery which revived the career of James Pattinson. He had spoken to Pattinson as well as other fast bowlers who suffered similar injuries. 

"I'm feeling good about the surgery, I've spoken to a number of Aussie and Kiwi bowlers who've had a similar surgery and they were all very positive about the results,” said Behrendorff. "This particular procedure has had good success rates in other professional pace bowlers with similar reoccurring issues," he added.

Looking for a permanent fix

Looking for a long-term solution, Behrendorff decided that surgery is the best opportunity to find a permanent fix.

"I'm feeling good about the surgery, I've spoken to a number of Aussie and Kiwi bowlers who've had a similar surgery and they were all very positive about the results,” Behrendorff said. "Unfortunately I've had the same injury over the last few years and we've tried a number of things and the injury continues to return," he added.

Behrendorff on his test career

Behrendorff said that he is not thinking about test cricket right now calling it ‘furthest thing from my mind at the moment’. But he also hopes that his test career is not over yet. “We've seen how Patto has come back and played in the recent Ashes series, so maybe it'll give me a chance to do that,” he said. Behrendorff has played 11 one-day internationals and seven T20 internationals and took his career-best 5-44 against the hosts at Lord's.
