Despite not getting the required output, Team India enters every tournament and bilateral series as the favorites. The reason behind it is the pool of talent that is present in the ranks and the number of available reserves. While on one end, it showcases the abundance of assets, on the other, it creates competition among capable individuals for a single spot. A foremost spinner like Yuzvendra Chahal not getting a place in the ODI series against West Indies testifies to this fact.

3 things you need to know

  • Team India is currently in the Caribbean for a bi-lateral series
  • India have won the Test and the ODI series

Yuzvendra Chahal could become first-choice spinner in ICC ODI World Cup 2023

Yuzvendra Chahal is in the race to become India's premier spinner in the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023, but ahead of the tournament, Chahal did not feature in the supposed practice series against West Indies. In his absence, Kuldeep Yadav bowled magnificently and ended up with 8 wickets in the 3-match series. Thus, before the World Cup, India's team management is seeking to witness every combination and would zero in on the most effective. So, as there is apparent competition, will Chahal be able to push for that esteemed spot in playing XI?

Chahal on his snubs

The leg spinner addressed the query and did not exhibit any concern. He puts the interest of the team ahead of everything else and expressed delight in getting to wear the Indian jersey. Here's what he said before the 2nd T20I, which is scheduled to take place on August 6.

Team combination is our priority and it is not something new. At 7 we generally play Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel. Three spinners can only play if the wickets are spin friendly. Kuldeep is bowling really well, he is in a great rhythm and that’s why the team is backing him. I keep working on nets so that whenever I get the chance I will grab it.

We are professional cricketers. I was playing after two months, last I played was in the IPL. It is all about preparation. This is not an individual sport, you are playing here for your team. There are times when players have to sit out for two series, so it doesn’t mean that they are not part of the team.

I am very happy that I am getting to wear the blue jersey every day. I am not sitting at home. I am traveling with the team. I am part of the team. I have played chess, it is an individual game but cricket is a team sport. Out of fifteen people in the squad, only eleven can play. In the past few series, when I was playing Kuldeep was not getting the chances.
