Faf du Plessis has been having a forgettable Test series in India both as a batsman and as a captain. He was a part of the South African squad that had lost the four-match Test series in India by a 0-3 margin four years ago. On this tour, Faf is leading the side but nothing seems to be going his way as he had lost all the tosses in the three-match series and his team also went on to taste bitter defeats in the previous two outings. On a personal note, Faf had a forgettable day with the bat and that too twice on the same day.
Faf baffled twice on the same day
Faf du Plessis was baffled by a dream delivery from Umesh Yadav in the morning session of Day 3. The Vidharbha Express pitched the ball on the onside which beat Faf's defence as he went back for one. Nonetheless, the Proteas were bowled out for 162 as Virat Kohli had enforced the follow-on and the South African skipper got another chance to make amends for his failure in the first innings. Unfortunately for him, he yet again got out to an unplayable delivery and this time, it was Mohammed Shami. It happened in the seventh over of the South African innings. On the final delivery, Shami bowled a good length ball which angled away from the batsman. The ball jagged back in when the skipper had attempted to defend it and struck straight on the pads as the visiting captain almost lost his balance. The Indian players appealed and the umpire raised his finger. Faf decided to get it reviewed but it did not yield any positive results as he had to walk back to the dugout for four. The video of Faf du Plessis getting baffled for the second time in one day was posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their official Twitter handle. Watch the video here.
India on the verge of a clean sweep
South Africa barely managed to get off the field without being bowled out, as they struggled to 132-8 at the close of the day's play in Ranchi on Monday. Having lost six wickets by tea on Day three, the Protes struggled to keep the game alive, as tailender Anrich Nortje and concussion substitute Thenius de Bruyn kept the hosts at bay. Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav wreaked havoc on the Proteas batting line-up, picking three scalps and two scalps respectively. Further damage was done by Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who picked a scalp each. With hopes of finishing off the on Day 3, India tried their best to get a breakthrough before umpires called it a day after a light reading session.
