However, in 2008, Lee took over McGrath’s place and spearheaded Australia's attack. The big reason for his Allan Border Medal win was his performance against Sri Lanka and India. In the same year, he took his 40th wickets at an average of 20.58.

In the same year, Brett Lee took home the Test Player of the Year title. In the Allan Border Medal count, Lee finished with 125 votes, while Hayden got 107 and Ricky Ponting got 64 votes. This was Lee’s first time on the stage since 2000, where he won Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year. After winning the award, Lee expressed his disappointment of missing the World Cup.
