Glenn Maxwell gets surprise backing from Ashes rival over mental health break
English all-rounder Moeen Ali backed Maxwell's decision by saying there is a lot of international cricket being played, which can make players mentally tired.

A few weeks ago, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell took an indefinite break from cricket citing mental health issues. The cricket fraternity hailed Maxwell’s decision as the right-hander found support from India captain Virat Kohli among other players. Recently, Glenn Maxwell also found some backing from his Ashes counterpart Moeen Ali.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali became the latest member from the cricketing community to hail Maxwell’s decision. The 32-year-old cricketer himself took a break from international cricket following England’s 2019 World Cup victory. The left-handed batsman made himself unavailable for selection of the ongoing limited-overs series in New Zealand and will also skip the upcoming tour to South Africa. While speaking with UAE-based reporters, Moeen Ali was of the opinion that a lot of international cricket being played, which can make players mentally tired.

Speaking about his own break from international cricket, the cricketer said that he took it because he felt tired. He added that it becomes tiring after a while, and being on the field on a continuous basis is quite draining for any player. Moeen himself is playing for Team Abu Dhabi in the ongoing T10 League in Abu Dhabi.

Apart from Moeen Ali, Australian head coach Justin Langer and limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch put forward their own opinion regarding the mental health of cricketers. A few days after Glenn Maxwell’s announcement, Australian batsman Nic Maddinson also withdrew from the Australian ‘A’ team. Maddinson said that cricket is a difficult sport and it is very important to take a break and come back stronger.
