About the ex-cricketers’ membership, the MCC took to Twitter to announce the same. The announcement came on October 22 as they honoured the South African legend with this distinction. Upon the announcement, Smith also took to Twitter to express his excitement. He thanked the MCC for the “incredible” honour and also mentioned that he had many memories at the Home of Cricket.
Apart from Graeme Smith, former Australian off-spinner was also awarded the membership in MCC. The two cricketers joined Paul Collingwood, AB de Villiers, Mitchell Johnson and Adrian Morgan who were awarded the same by MCC earlier this year.
The legendary South African cricketer played 117 Tests and 197 ODI’s for the country. He also played 33 T20I’s and led South Africa in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 at home. The left-hander scored 9,265 Test runs and 6,989 runs in ODI matches. At just 22 years of age, he was named as the captain of the South African Test side, thus making him the youngest Test captain in South Africa’s rich Test history.
