After a comfortable win on Friday, the second ODI between India vs Australia could see a couple of changes. Mohammed Siraj may come into the squad and Jasprit Bumrah could be rested, as per speculations. Since every combination needs to be tried out before the start of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, volatility is at large. However, during all the movements, one player needs to remain constant in the team, according to a former cricketer.

3 things you need to know

  • India defeated Australia by five wickets in the 1st ODI
  • Suryakumar Yadav scored a well-combined 50 to answer his critics
  • Mohammed Shami snared 5 wickets in the 1st ODI

Aakash Chopra expects Shardul Thakur to play in the 2nd ODI

Aakash Chopra, a former Indian batter, believes Shardul Thakur shouldn't be benched for the second ODI against Australia despite his lacklustre performance in the series opener. In the Mohali ODI, Thakur went for 78 runs in his 10 overs while going without a wicket. His lack of speed was exploited by Australian batters, who hammered him for 11 fours and two sixes. Thakur has been under increasing pressure ever since he failed to perform with the bat in the lower order. Aakash Chopra, however, maintains that India must continue to support Thakur as he has looked as someone who could fill a certain function for the squad and bring versatility to the lineup.

“In the bowling, I expect there is a possible churning that might just happen. I feel Jasprit Bumrah will be rested and Mohammed Siraj will get a game. I still see Shardul Thakur playing. In fact, he should play. If Shardul Thakur is part of your World Cup squad, he should not be touched. That is what I feel. There will be another chance for Mohammed Shami and Thakur.”

On changes in batting order

"I don't see many changes in batting. You won't touch KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. If Tilak Varma has to come in, Ishan Kishan will have to go up the order. I don't see that happening since Ruturaj Gaikwad is there,” he commented."

Indian batters performed phenomenally well in the 1st ODI, where Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Suryakumar Yadav each scored a half-century. In the second ODI, all eyes would be on Shreyas Iyer as he would be seeking to prove his mettle before the World Cup. The second ODI will take place on Sunday, September 24.
