India's recent 0-3 loss to New Zealand at home has caused them to slip to the second spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table. To secure a berth in the final, the Indian team, set to face Australia in a five-match Test series, must win at least four out of the five upcoming matches. Failing to do so will make India's qualification dependent on other teams' results.

Currently, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa are also in the running to finish in the top two and reach the final, scheduled for June next year at Lord's Cricket Ground in London, England. India's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia will be crucial in determining their chances of making it to the WTC 2025 final.

India's qualification scenarios for the WTC 2025 final are as follows:

4-0 or 5-0 win for India

India will directly qualify for the WTC 2025 final if they defeat Australia 4-0 or 5-0 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

3-1, 3-0, or 4-1 win for India

India will qualify if they beat Australia by a margin of 3-1, 3-0, or 4-1, and England avoids a whitewash against New Zealand.

2-0 win for India

India will finish in the top-two if they beat Australia 2-0 and England win at least one Test against New Zealand.

3-2 win for India

India needs to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-2, and then hope England wins one Test against New Zealand, and Sri Lanka draws one Test against Australia.

2-1, 1-1, or 1-0 win for India

India needs England to avoid defeat in two Tests vs. New Zealand, and Sri Lanka must draw one Test against Australia.

2-2 draw

India qualifies if Sri Lanka wins the Test series against Australia, and New Zealand only wins one of the three Tests against England.

2-3 defeat for India

India's chances depend on the results of Sri Lanka, South Africa, and New Zealand. India finishes in the top two only if Sri Lanka and South Africa lose two of their remaining four matches, and New Zealand only wins one of the three Tests against England.

1-2, 1-3, 0-1 defeat for India or 0-0 draw

India qualifies if England wins the Test series against New Zealand, Pakistan beats South Africa 2-0, Australia beats Sri Lanka 2-0, and the South Africa-Sri Lanka series ends in a 1-1 draw.

1-4, 0-2, or 0-3 defeat for India

India qualifies only if England whitewashes New Zealand (3-0), Pakistan beats South Africa 2-0, Australia beats Sri Lanka 2-0, and the South Africa-Sri Lanka series ends in a 1-1 draw.
