With the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground set to host the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final on June 11, 2025, the race to qualify is heating up. As the 2023-25 WTC cycle nears its climax, several teams are emerging as strong contenders for the ultimate showdown in cricket’s longest format.

As the WTC cycle enters its final stretch, the race to Lord’s promises to be intense. India, Australia, and New Zealand are the leading contenders, each with their own strengths and challenges. Here’s a snapshot of the leading teams and their prospects for making it to the historic final.

India: Leading the Charge

Currently sitting atop the WTC standings with 68.52% of possible points, India is in an enviable position. The team, which has finished as runners-up in the previous two WTC Finals, is determined to secure the trophy this time around. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India’s remaining fixtures include crucial series against Bangladesh (home, two Tests), New Zealand (home, three Tests), and Australia (away, five Tests).

India’s best possible finish stands at 85.09%, reflecting their strong position if they can navigate their remaining series successfully. The home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand will be vital, but the five-Test series in Australia will be the true test of their championship mettle.

Australia: Defending Champions

Australia, the reigning WTC champions, are also well-placed, holding 62.50% of possible points. Pat Cummins’ team has been a dominant force in Test cricket, and their performances continue to underscore their status as one of the top teams. Australia’s remaining fixtures include a high-stakes series against India (home, five Tests) and a series against Sri Lanka (away, two Tests).

With a best possible finish of 76.32%, Australia’s path to the final is well within reach. Their home advantage in the series against India could play a crucial role, and their form against Sri Lanka will be pivotal.

New Zealand: Fighting for Redemption

New Zealand, the 2021 WTC champions, are currently in third place with 50% of possible points. Their campaign has seen a mix of results, with a draw against Bangladesh, a home series win against South Africa, and a loss to Australia. The Kiwis’ remaining matches include challenging series against Sri Lanka (away, two Tests), India (away, three Tests), and England (home, three Tests).

New Zealand’s best possible finish of 78.57% highlights their potential, but they will need to overcome significant challenges to secure their place in the final. Their performances in the upcoming series will be crucial, particularly the away series in India and the home series against England.
