India’s premier off-spinner R Ashwin is on the threshold of yet another milestone in Test matches when India take on Bangladesh in the first Test starting on Thursday at Indore. The series is historic as the second Test match will be a Day-Night Test, to be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India won the T20I series 2-1 after suffering a shock defeat in the first game, and the hosts will be relying on R Ashwin to deliver the goods as he did in the previous Test series against South Africa.
Ind vs Ban: R Ashin to join Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble in an elite list
R Ashwin, who made his Test debut in 2011, is nearing yet another landmark in his illustrious Test career so far. The Delhi Capitals’ newest recruit has 249 wickets in Test matches played at home, and become the only 3rd Indian bowler to pick up 250 wickets at home after Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble. Anil Kumble leads the pack with 350 wickets at home, while Harbhajan Singh has 265 wickets at home.
Overall, R Ashwin is India’s 4th highest wicket-taker in Tests, only behind Harbhajan Singh, Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble. Kumble, who is also the 3rd highest wicket-taker in the history of Test matches, has a mammoth 619 scalps, while India’s World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev is a distant second with 434. Harbhajan Singh has 417 wickets while R Ashwin has a total of 357 in his illustrious career so far.
Ajinkya Rahane: India not taking Bangladesh lightly
R Ashwin will look to steer India to another series win at home against Bangladesh, to add to their complete dominance in home Test matches. Despite the contrast in the quality of both teams, Bangladesh are known to be giant killers and India’s vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has said that they’re not taking the visitors lightly. Rahane said that Bangladesh are a very good team and the victory against South Africa is in the past. He further added that they’re taking it one game at a time as every game is important in the World Test Championship. India will look to continue their dominant start to the World Test Championship, having already amassed 240 points, which is more than the points tally of the other 8 teams combined.
