IND vs BAN: Virat Kohli misses out on crucial milestone after throwing away wicket in 1st Test

Virat Kohli , one of the most prolific batsmen in Test cricket, was on the cusp of achieving a remarkable milestone in the first Test match against Bangladesh . Needing just 152 runs to reach the 9,000-run mark, Kohli had the perfect opportunity to etch his name in the record books once again. However, fate had other plans.

Virat Kohli misses out on crucial milestone

In a shocking turn of events, Virat Kohli was dismissed for a mere 6 runs off 6 balls by the impressive Hasan Mahmud. The Indian maestro, known for his exceptional technique and temperament, looked out of sorts, throwing away his wicket in a manner uncharacteristic of his usual self.

Virat Kohli was dismissed as he tried to drive an outside-off delivery that was not close enough. The former India skipper edged the ball to Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das. 

As Virat Kohli trudged back to the pavilion, the crowd was left stunned, and the Indian dressing room was left reeling from the early blow. The milestone, which seemed like a mere formality, will now have to wait. Kohli's dismissal has not only delayed his achievement but also put India on the back foot in the ongoing Test match.

If Virat Kohli reaches the 9000-run milestone in the second innings of the ongoing first Test match, he will become the fourth Indian batter to accomplish this feat. Kohli will join the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Rahul Dravid on the list. 

Virat Kohli has amassed 8854 Test runs in 192 innings with 254 not-out being his highest score. He has 29 centuries and 30 half-centuries to his name in the longest format. Kohli now needs just 146 runs to reach the 9000-run milestone in Tests. 

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Hasan Mahmud struck early to dismiss Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for 6 runs. He went to take the wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli before removing Rishabh Pant following the lunch break. Yashasvi Jaiswal has reached his half-century and is currently batting with KL Rahul in the middle.
