Chasing India’s first innings total of 497-9d, the South African batsmen faltered to 129-6 going into lunch on Day 3. Resuming the day at 9-2, the Proteas misery continued as Indian pacers and spinners tormented the visitor’s line-up. At lunch, the visitors were trailing the hosts by 368 runs and required another 169 to avoid batting again.

Key moments from Day 3 afternoon session

South Africa all out for 162

In another dismal batting performance, South Africa were shot-out for 162 inside 60 overs to hand India a solid 335-run first-innings lead. Resuming the second session at 129-6, no resistance was provided by the lower-order as the Proteas could only manage to add another 33 runs to their total. Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers as the pacer picked 3-40 in 9 overs.

Captain Kohli decides to enforce the follow-on

With a lead of 335 to defend, Team India decided to enforce follow-on to the visitors. It was the second time that the Indian team forced South Africa to bat again in the series. In the second Test in Pune, World No 1 Test side also enforced follow-on after gaining a huge 326-run lead. The Indian team went on to win that Test match by an innings and 137 runs and will be eying another innings victory to make it a 3-0 series win.

Mohammed Shami’s second innings opening spell

The right-arm pacer rocked the visitors top-order once again to leave South Africa tottering at 26-4 at tea on day three. Shami cleaned-up Zubayr Hamza for a duck before trapping skipper Faf du Plessis plumb in front. The 29-year old then dismissed Temba Bavuma for a duck just before the break to leave South Africa tottering at 22-4. Before both teams departed for the tea break, Shami’s figures read 5-2-7-3.
