Riding on Rohit Sharma's twin centuries, India set a target of 395 in Ind vs SA first Test. South Africa lost Dean Elgar early and ended Day 4 at 11-1

After struggling with the ball on the opening two days, the South African bowlers conceded a huge first-innings total as India amassed 502-7d. The Proteas then got off to a torrid start as they lost their first four wickets with just 63 runs on the board. However, Dean Elgar’s century propelled the visitors to reach 431 early on Day 4.

After South Africa’s first innings, the Indian batsmen came out all-guns blazing in their second innings. After going into lunch at 35-1, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara upped the scoring rate in their 169-run partnership. Pujara was finally dismissed at 81 by Vernon Philander when India reached 190. Rohit Sharma was then joined by Ravindra Jadeja who himself smashed three towering sixes in his 32-ball stay at the crease. The stylish right-handed batsman went onto register his 5th Test century and his second of the match as he scored 127 runs off 149 balls. Some late flurry of boundaries by Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane propelled India to score 323-4d during the final session of the day. Their declaration meant the visitors were left to face 9 overs before stumps on Day 4. Chasing 395, the Proteas lost Dean Elgar early as they ended the day at 11-1.

Ind vs SA: Rohit Sharma creates World record
In another whirlwind innings by the batsman, Rohit Sharma struck 7 huge sixes in his innings of 127. In addition, the batsman also struck 6 sixes during the first innings. For his efforts, Rohit Sharma broke a 23-year old world record of hitting the most number of sixes in a single Test match. Previously, it was Wasim Akram who hit 12 sixes against Zimbabwe in 1996.
