His 215 at the top of the order in Vishakhapatnam propelled Team India to 502-7d in their first innings. It was also his maiden century in Tests and he became one of the few international batsmen to convert his first 100 into a double. Due to Agarwal’s efforts as an opener, India won the opening match by 203 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the series.

He was eventually dismissed by Rabada after scoring 108 runs off 195 balls, however, he made sure that Team India were all set for another huge first inning total against the Proteas.
