Team India suffer massive massive World Test Championship setback after getting punished by ICC

South Africa defeated India by an innings and 32 runs in the first Test match, which took place between December 26 and 28. India batted first and scored 245 runs in their first innings, highlighted by KL Rahul's amazing 101. South Africa responded by scoring 408 runs in their first innings, led by an amazing 185 from Dean Elgar. Nandre Burger and Marco Jansen of South Africa bowled effectively as India collapsed at 131 in their second innings. Dean Elgar was named Player of the Match for his superb batting performance at ‌SuperSport Park.

Team India is fined for their slow overrate against South Africa on Boxing Day

Due to a slow over-rate during the first Test against South Africa in Centurion, Team India was fined 10% of their match money and docked two ICC World Test Championship points. Chris Broad, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, assessed the sentence after India fell two overs short of the target when time allowances were taken into account.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which tackles minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5% of their match fee for each over that is not bowled inside the specified time. Furthermore, Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing regulations specifies a one-point penalty for each over that a team fails to complete. As a result, India's World Test Championship point total has been cut by two.

India's captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the offence and accepted the suggested punishment, avoiding a formal hearing. On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Langton Rusere led the charge, with third umpire Ahsan Raza and fourth umpire Stephen Harris backing them up.

Avesh Khan has been named as the replacement for Mohammed Shami in the team for the second Test against South Africa. The upcoming match is set to take place in Cape Town from January 3rd to 7th, 2024.
