Shahbaz Nadeem made his debut in the ongoing third Test between India and South Africa. In doing so, he became the 296th Indian player to represent the country in Test cricket. After playing 110 first-class matches for Jharkhand, the left-arm spinner finally achieved his life-long dream of playing in the oldest format of the game. Co-incidentally, his debut also came at his home ground in Ranchi. The 30-year old cricketer was included in the playing XI in place of leading pacer Ishant Sharma.
As Team India posted a mammoth 497-9d in their first-innings, Nadeem contributed his part with the ball with debut figures of 2-22 in 11.2 overs. He dismissed Temba Bavuma with a stumping to claim his first international wicket. However, it is a rare occurrence for a bowler to get a stumping in his very first match, making it a special moment. Let us have a look at three more spinners who have achieved the same feat in the past.
3 spinners who got a wicket off a stumping on Test debuts
1. Stuart MacGill
Retired Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill made his Test debut during South Africa’s tour 'Down Under' in 1998. Australia, having won the second Test, took a 1-0 lead in the series. MacGill finally got a chance to play in the third Test where he took 2-112 in South Africa’s first innings. However, in the second-innings, MacGill took 3-22 in 7 overs which included the wicket of Herschelle Gibbs. Gibbs was stumped by Healy as MacGill claimed his first-ever wicket off stumping on his debut itself.
2. Naimur Rahman
Leading Bangladesh in their first-ever Test match, Naimur Rahman took 6-132 against India on Test debut. Bangladesh may have lost the match by 9 wickets but the debut spell by their captain is etched in every Bangladeshi fans’ memory. His 6-wicket haul included the scalps of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. He also stumped Saba Karim for 15 and became one of the rare bowlers in Test history to claim a wicket off a stumping on debut.
3. Amit Mishra
The Australian team toured India for Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2008. Leggie Amit Mishra made his debut in the second Test of the series which also marked Peter Siddle’s debut for Australia. In his debut innings itself, Mishra claimed 5-71 to hand India a huge 201-run lead over the visitors. Indian skipper MS Dhoni stumped Siddle off Mishra and the Indian team went onto win the match by 320 runs. Mishra was one of the crucial members of that series that defeated Australia 2-0 to regain the trophy.
