India proved why they are the top-ranked Test side and a team to beat at home after a comprehensive win against South Africa by an innings and 202 runs at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi on Tuesday to register a clean sweep by a 3-0 margin. Meanwhile, this was also Team India's second successive clean sweep in red-ball cricket. They had earlier won both away Test matches against West Indies as well. By virtue of this win, India not only maintain an undisputed run in the ICC World Test Championship rankings, but there is something else that they have achieved.
Team India in World Test Championship
India's ICC World Test Championship campaign has got off to a dream start as they have now registered five successive Test match wins. Meanwhile, the Virat Kohli-led side are comfortably placed at the summit of the World Test Championship points table with 240 points. No other team is anywhere near them. New Zealand (60) and Sri Lanka (60) are placed at the second and third positions respectively. Here is the updated points table after India had handed an innings defeat to the Proteas. Take a look.
Apart from India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, arch-rivals Australia and England occupy the fourth and fifth positions with 56 points each after the Ashes 2019 was levelled 2-2. West Indies and South Africa are yet to open their account as the Caribbeans have lost both the games that they have played while the Proteas have lost all their three matches as well. Meanwhile, bottom-placed sides Bangladesh and Pakistan are yet to begin their campaign. Another interesting factor that highlights India's overall dominance in the ICC World Test Championship points table is that their 240 points are way more than the overall points combined by New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Australia and England which accounts to 232.
India demolish SA without breaking a sweat
India took only two overs to wrap South Africa’s second innings on Tuesday as they won the third Test by an innings and 202 runs at Ranchi. In the process, they whitewashed South Africa (SA) 3-0. This is not just the 4th biggest innings defeat for SA, but also only the third time since re-admission that the team has lost all matches in a series involving three or more Tests. By the virtue of this win, the top-ranked side in the game's longest format maintain an undisputed run in the ICC World Test Championship points table with 240 points in five matches. South Africa will now be back in India for a three-match ODI series in March 2020.
