IPL 2020: BCCI reportedly activates 'Force Majeure' clause with official broadcasters
IPL 2020: According to a report published in a leading media network, the BCCI has sent a letter to the official broadcasters for safeguarding their interests.

coronavirus crisis in country is getting worse day by day and situation doesn't look very promising. And with that, probability of Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) season taking place this year is diminishing. COVID-19 cases are increasing rapidly in country and under se circumstances, BCCI has almost chance to move ahead with tournament. precarious situation has led BCCI to invoke ‘Force Majeure’ clause with official broadcasters of tournament on IPL 2020 media rights contract.

IPL 2020: BCCI uncertain about IPL 2020 as it activates 'Force Majeure'
According to a report published by Times of India, BCCI has sent a letter to official broadcasters regarding ‘Force Majeure’ clause if 13th edition of tournament is delayed or suspended.
In all standard contractual agreements, 'Force Majeure' clause is included with an aim to protect parties in case y are unable to perform ir obligations under a contract due to occurrence of an event which is outside reasonable control of party and which prevents m to perform as per terms of contract.

Generally, term ‘Force Majeure’ implies to natural disasters like earthquakes, floods etc. But here BCCI has invoked clause in wake of COVID-19 outbreak. This makes it clear that with pass of time, even BCCI manment is losing hope on going ahead with IPL 2020. That's why in order to protect mselves and comply with contractual obligations, y have decided to invoke said clause.

According to Inside Sport, BCCI officials did t want to come on record to comment on situation. y have furr learnt that same set of letters is being sent to or contractual parties and commercial sponsors by BCCI in order to safeguard mselves. BCCI will also invoke ‘Force Majeure’ clause with sponsors including its title sponsor VIVO.
