IPL 2020: Doordarshan seeks grand comeback with radio rights for tournament from BCCI

IPL 2020: National broadcaster Prasar Bharati has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the rights to have radio commentary of the IPL.

13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) which was scheduled to commence on March 29 was postponed to April 15 due to coronavirus outbreak. Despite uncertainty surrounding tournament, Indian national broadcaster Prasar Bharati has asked  Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for audio rights of tournament.

Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati told a leading media network that  IPL is t a part of current MoU between BCCI and Prasar Bharati but y are keen that BCCI expands scope of ir agreement, which is right w limited to home matches of Indiancricket team and certain domestic tournaments.

Vempati added that he has personally written to Sourav Ganguly, BCCI President and its office bearers to consider expanding current MoU arrangement to include IPL so that radio listeners get to follow matches. He also said that in current situation, it might also be ideal keeping public interest in mind and y are optimistic that BCCI will get back to m.

Prasar Bharti had written to BCCI last year as well, requesting m to include IPL in list but since body itself was going through restructuring,  proposal never saw light of day.

IPL 2020: BCCI to incur heavy losses if IPL 2020 gets cancelled

With IPL being a massive revenue-generating stream, cancelling tournament could land a heavy blow on BCCI's financial plans for year ahead. According to new figures that have emerged in a report, BCCI could face losses amounting to ₹3,869.50 crores. se losses would come in form of broadcast and digital revenues that BCCI was supposed to earn from sponsors. It was even reported that one of IPL's primary broadcasters sold off most of ir advertising spots for IPL, two months ahead of tournament's original starting date.
