IPL 2020: KKR CEO claims removing Sourav Ganguly in 2011 NOT tough for him as perceived

Sourav Ganguly was removed from Kolkata Knight Riders after the 2010 edition. Ahead of the IPL 2020, KKR's CEO Venky Mysore opens up about the decision.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is kwn for his great leadership qualities. cricketer, who led Indian team during a tough time, has also been credited with bringing in younger players into squad and changing mentality of players. Several cricketers such as Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh have talked about importance Sourav Ganguly had on ir careers.

However, Prince of Kolkata failed to translate same success during his stint at Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL. Sourav Ganguly took charge of Kolkata Knight Riders during initial seasons amidst great fanfare. But team struggled to perform during Sourav Ganguly’s tenure, with team finishing sixth in 2008 and 2010 as well under his leadership.

Following poor results, Sourav Ganguly was t retained by KKR’s manment after 2010. w, 10 years after Sourav Ganguly’s removal, KKR CEO Venky Mysore has shed light on experience of removing him as captain.

KKR CEO opens up on Sourav Ganguly’s removal

Making an appearance on latest episode of ‘ RK Show’ on YouTube, KKR CEO explained that decision to t continue with Sourav Ganguly involved two parts. According to him, t retaining Sourav Ganguly didn’t seem like a big decision to him as he was unattached emotionally, having just joined Kolkata Knight Riders back n. Mysore admitted that if he had been part of set up for two-three years, same decision would have been much tougher for him.

KKR CEO said that while decision was tough on owners, it wasn’t so for him as he had come from outside. He also admitted that he was in charge of decision, as he was given mandate for same.Talking about decision to drop Sourav Ganguly, Mysore recalled that during that moment he told owners that while it may t work out and y may fall flat on ir faces, it is a different approach that he is proposing. During interview, KKR MD also praised owners of franchise, i.e. Red Chillies Entertainment, Jay Mehta and Juhi Chawla, for ir constant support.

Elaborating furr on his role in Kolkata Knight Riders setup, Venky Mysore said that he is t someone who is a lone ranger who wants to do his own things. Rar, he was someone who was given both automy and accountably and he used to report to boards as well. He also praised board for backing him during decision and taking heat and flak for a decision which was t irs. While concluding, Venky Mysore reiterated fact that decision to remove Sourav Ganguly was much tougher for owners than him.
