Explained: Why was Ishan Kishan's stumping attempt called 'No-ball' during IND vs AUS 3rd T20I?

During the intense 3rd T20 between India and Australia, there came a moment which perplexed the fans and became one of the talking points of the match. It was advantage India, right until the second last over but Matthew Wade and Glenn Maxwell's unbelievable hitting snatched the match away from the hosts. In the penultimate over, Australia got the impetus of a free hit, however, it emanated neither after a step out nor because it went over the waist height.

How did a stumping chance become a legitimate no-ball?

Measuring the intention of Matthew Wade, Axar Patel bowled a wide outside the off stump. The Aussie captain missed it and the wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan dislodged the stumps and appealed for a stumping. The square umpire did not take any risk and signalled the TV umpire to make a decision. Upon viewing the potential stumping, 3rd umpire found that Kishan had collected the ball before it passed the wickets. Hence, not only did the stumping appeal turn vague but it was called a no-ball. Thus, Australia received an extra run, and a free hit which was sent into the stands. There was confusion at first regarding the call by the 3rd umpire, but everything happened as per the rules, that states.

“The wicketkeeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker’s end from the moment the ball comes into play until a ball delivered by the bowler touches the bat or person of the striker or passes the wicket at the striker’s end, or the striker attempts a run.”

“In the event of the wicket-keeper contravening this Law, the striker’s end umpire shall call and signal No ball as soon as applicable after the delivery of the ball.”

Australia still alive in the series

The 3rd T20 between India and Australia contributed to the high-scoring matches, which has been the case with the series. It was Ruturaj Gaikwad, who stepped for Team India this time. His 123-run knock left Australia completely distraught the Aussies as a huge total i.e., 222, was put on the board.

Chasing 223, Australia got the ideal start but Indian bowlers kept chipping in with wickets. However, the 6th wicket partnership between Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Wade changed the complexion of the game and eventually, Australia won the match by 5 wickets. With this result, the series has been kept alive. It is 2-1 India, with two matches left to be played.
