Despite being the sibling of the accomplished Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, Kaif, a 27-year-old fast bowler who represents Bengal in domestic cricket, failed to attract any bids for the upcoming IPL season.

Mohammed Shami's brother goes unsold at IPL 2024 Auction

The auction for the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) took place at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on Tuesday, December 19. A total of 333 players went down under the hammer including 119 overseas stars with two from associate nations. Franchises spent INR 2,30,45,00,000 (Rs. 230 crore or $276 million) to buy 72 players including 30 from other countries.

Mohammed Shami's younger brother Mohammed Kaif went unsold at the auction. Having played in 9 List A matches for Bengal recently, Kaif made his List A debut in 2021. Unfortunately, his skills did not secure him a spot in the IPL 2024, contrasting with the success of his elder brother, who finished the ODI World Cup 2023 as the highest wicket-taker and was India's best performer on the field.

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc broke all records as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spent a whopping INR 24.75 crore to buy the speedster. He became the most expensive buy in the history of IPL. Australian captain Pat Cummins had broken the same record an hour earlier when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bought him for INR 20.50 crore. Harshal Patel became the most expensive Indian buy after Punjab Kings (PBKS) drained INR 11.75 crore to secure his services for IPL 2024.
