Punjab Kings Part Ways With Sanjay Bangar, Trevor Bayliss Ahead of IPL 2025
As per a report from ESPNCricinfo, the Punjab Kings have parted ways with the team head coach, Trevor Bayliss and head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar. The decision was made by the board of the franchise, including the four co-owners. The decision was made to undergo a bold overhaul of the team's coaching staff.
Notably, the Punjab Kings have undergone multiple coaching staff changes, and Sanjay Bangar was associated with the franchise twice. Initially, Bangar was roped in by the Kings as the head coach, and he worked from 2014-2016. The shifts then happened consistently as Virender Sehwag (2017), Bradd Hodge (2018), Mike Hesson (2019) and Anil Kumble (2020-2022). Trevor Bayliss took over after Kumble, and now the franchise has roped in a new man for the role.
Punjab Kings have already roped in former Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting, who will be taking over as the head coach of the franchise. The legendary Australian cricketer recently opened up on why he chose Punjab despite being in talks with multiple franchises.
"Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was 'Project Punjab ,' which attracted me. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge. The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings' that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL ," Ricky Ponting said.
