Recently Delhi Capitals ended terms with long-term coach Ricky Ponting. The former Australian captain held the helm at DC for a total of seven seasons, taking the franchise to the final for the first time during the stint. However, the team's poor show in the last three IPL seasons has seemingly compelled the decision-makers to bring transition, hence, the search for a head coach is on. Subsequently, Sourav Ganguly, who already holds the Team Director's position at Delhi Capitals, was perceived as a capable individual to take over the baton from Ponting, but according to reports, he is not in the reckoning.
Sourav Ganguly Not In The Reckoning For Delhi Capitals' Head Coach Position
Recently, in an interview with Bengali Daily Aajkaal, former India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his desire to take up the coaching role for the first time in this career.
"Why not me? Let's see if I can do it or not. We need to rope in some new players. I wanted to bring in England's new star, Jamie Smith, for DC's SA20 side (Pretoria Capitals). He was even ready to come in, but then England will be busy for their India tour at that time," Ganguly said.
Despite apparently knowing about his clear interest, Delhi Capitals are reportedly not willing to render their Director of Cricket with the responsibility of coaching the team. In fact, DC are on the lookout for someone like Gautam Gambhir, who has had success in a brief period as a mentor. Gambhir started his career as mentor in 2022. He guided LSG to the playoffs in its first two seasons. He then joined KKR in 2024, and won them the title.
Moreover, Delhi Capitals want stability to permeate in the franchise ahead of the mega auctions. Hence, putting Ganguly away from the Director's position could cause instability, and since he has a lot on the plate being entrusted as the director, Delhi Capitals are wary of that and hence would look to explore other options.
